Blog Chain: Books

I don’t know what’s wrong with me lately. My book came out this month and my brain turned to mush. I’m late on another chain and it won’t happen again. Sorry! Today’s chain was started by Kate. She said, “Books are______.”

For me, books are an escape, brain candy, friends, and so much more. It’s funny because I didn’t like to read until I started junior high school. My mom had whispered conversations with my teachers about it, not so whispered ones with my sister who loved to read. So what happened when I turned 12? We got choices in school. My teacher, Margaret Schmeh, showed us her back closet that was full of every genre imaginable. She said the only requirement was that we read. Any book from there we wanted. She even let us bring our own books and use those as required reading (after she approved them, of course). When the choice became mine, as opposed to school imposed, I devoured all genres. The top picks for me that year were The Secret Garden; That Was Then, This is Now; After the Rain; This Place Has No Atmosphere; Anne of Green Gables.

Thanks to Ms. Schmeh, I learned to love books and never went back to my other life. Thanks to her, I became acquainted with my favorite authors and acquired role models whose writing I wished to emulate. Thanks to her, and a world pre-standardized tests, students had a chance to just read.

If you haven’t yet read Christine’s post please do.
